primtech empowers Siemens Energy

Digital transformation to increase performance and efficiency in the energy sector.

The German transmission system operator TransnetBW has commissioned Siemens Energy with the renovation and new construction project for its 380 kV substation in Daxlanden near Karlsruhe. Daxlanden is one of the largest substations in Germany. The Daxlanden project is an outstanding example of the performance and efficiency of Siemens Energy and primtech Solutions. With a duration of several years and numerous individual stages, this project represents considerable complexity. Completion is planned for 2029.

Challenge - valid data

One of the particular challenges in this complex project, which is increasingly commonplace in this industry, was the existing documentation of the system. Some of it dated back to the 1960s and was only available in hand-drawn form. This is not a valid basis for adequate planning.

Valid digital data basis

Michael Deininger, Technical Project Manager Daxlanden and fully responsible for primary technology at Siemens Energy: “The speed that we achieve with primtech was one of the decisive factors for us. Quickly creating a valid digital data basis that goes beyond simple 3D solids and allows us to efficiently remodel plant components for which there is no reliable documentation is a key success factor for us.”

The OSR function and the primtech OSR+PRO service

The OSR function in primtech 3d and the primtech OSR+PRO service for the digital inventory of existing subsations make it possible to quickly create a valid and digital data basis and make it immediately usable in the project. The processing time for the Daxlanden project was significantly reduced by primtech, which is invaluable for a project of this size and complexity.

Project success and collaboration

“With its specific software solutions and services, primtech has provided indispensable tools for managing complex projects and has established itself as part of the project team. The speed and efficiency with which valid, digital data can be generated and processed make primtech the first choice for projects of this kind. We look forward to continuing our collaboration and completing the Daxlanden project. A further step towards the successful and efficient implementation of the energy transition.”

“Siemens Energy and primtech have been working together for years and this cooperation is also characterized by a high degree of individualization and customer-specific adaptations within the software, which is another plus point for primtech. Thanks to the excellent end-to-end support and training provided by primtech, the project team can make optimum use of the software.”

Using primtech 3D models, Navisworks and a linked project plan, Siemens Energy creates BIM 4D models with Timeliner to simulate the project flow. The ability to work on the model with several people simultaneously within primtech has further increased the speed - at peak times, up to six people were working on it at the same time.

Quotes from the project

Frank Weber sums it up aptly: “No matter how good or bad the documentation is, the truth is in the substation. I simply get it with the laser scan and the primtech OSR function or the primtech OSR+PRO service! Compared to other software solutions, primtech has proven to be much more efficient. A decisive advantage that has saved us a lot of work.”
